  • In the Loop: Counterpoint: Athens Is Nothing Like Ferguson

    1280px-Nash_Bearcat.jpg

In May 2013, the Athens-Clarke County Commission, based on Police Chief Jack Lumpkin's recommendation, voted unanimously, bleeding hearts and all, to accept a $240,000 Lenco BearCat (Ballistic Engineered Armored Response Counter Attack Truck) from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security through the Georgia Emergency Management Agency.

The BearCat joins a cache of equipment and vehicles ACCPD has acquired from DHS over the past decade, including a $218,000 mobile command center and an $80,000 bomb-sniffing dog.

  • Homedrone: Live Review: Nine Inch Nails and Soundgarden at Aaron's Amphitheatre

    NIN.jpg

A friend of mine once told a funny story, a through-the-grapevine anecdote about someone's mom running into a mohawked Trent Reznor at the neighborhood Kroger or whatever and a bashful Rez explaining that the hairdo was "for the kids."

These days, Reznor's fashion choices are honestly pretty MOR for a man who penned the lyric "hard line bad luck fist fuck"—shorts, muscle shirts, the occasional tasteful bit of leather—and his audience is no longer so much "the kids," but rather those kids who grew up with his nihilistic shut-in anti-anthems, kids now pushing 30, 40 years old but still eager to fist-pump along with steadfastly antisocial tunes like "Gave Up."

  • In the Loop: More Student Housing Proposed Downtown

At the top of the agenda for the Athens-Clarke County Planning Commission Thursday night was a plan for more student housing.

Campus Acquisitions, a company based in Chicago, wants to turn 165 E. Dougherty St. into a five-story mixed use development with retail spaces at ground level and student apartments above. Until recently, an office building on the property housed Advantage Behavioral Health Systems, and it's now occupied by the tech incubator Four Athens.

The biggest concern voiced by the public and the planning commission was the waiver for residential density. The plan would add 81 residential dwelling units, or 237 bedrooms, which is 27 bedrooms too many, according to the current zoning codes.

The Art Rocks Athens Foundation opened its inaugural exhibit at the UGA Special Collections Library last night and, while the party never got quite out of bounds, it was an amazing evening. The foundation was created to celebrate the art and artists that were an integral part of the Athens music scene in its early days. “ARTifacts Rock Athens: Relics from the Athens Music Scene, 1975-1985” does just that with ample displays celebrating the art and music of bands like Pylon, Oh Okay, the B-52’s, Love Tractor and more.

  • Homedrone: Watch Michael Stipe Induct Nirvana Into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

The 2014 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony happened last night at Brooklyn's Barclays Center, where acts like Hall & Oates, Kiss, Cat Stevens, Linda Ronstadt and Peter Gabriel were bestowed with the designation (see the full list of this year's inductees here). But the biggest moment(s) of the night came when grunge pioneers Nirvana were honored, 20 years after Kurt Cobain's death.

R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe was on hand to introduce the group, saying, "Nirvana were artists in every sense of the word. Nirvana tapped into a voice that was yearning to be heard. Nirvana were kicking against the mainstream. They spoke truth and a lot of people listened."

"They were singular and loud and melodic and deeply original," he continued. "And that voice. That voice. Kurt, we miss you. I miss you. This is not just pop music. This is something much greater than that."

Watch the video after the jump.
