  • In the Loop: Athenians Protest Ferguson Peacefully

141125Athens - Ferguson Grand Jury Portest at The Arch _31.jpg

There were no riots, no overturned cars or burning storefronts. No marchers blocking the interstate. Nobody throwing rocks through Five Guys' windows or carrying crates of vinyl out of Wuxtry. No police in riot gear, throwing smoke bombs. Just 200 or so people gathered at the Arch, holding signs and speaking from the heart about their frustration with a St. Louis County, MO, grand jury's decision not to indict Officer Darren Wilson in the shooting death of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown.

"The system acts like it's open season on black youth," said Alvin Sheats, president of the Clarke County NAACP.

A Missouri grand jury declined to indict Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson last night in the shooting death of Ferguson resident Michael Brown.

The decision enraged many and sparked protests all over the country. Locally, a Ferguson solidarity protest organized by Athens for Everyone will be held at 5:30 p.m. today at the Arch.

If you've got some time to spare, here's a PDF of the full grand jury report. In addition to mainstream news outlets, Vice had some terrific on-the-ground coverage, as well. Read those first, or jump straight into the comments.

  • In the Loop: Jason Carter Introduces Drive-By Truckers

Game over: Jason Carter has won the coveted Patterson Hood endorsement.

Just kidding—nobody's sealed the deal yet. But introducing the Drive-By Truckers—whom Carter befriended while attending UGA law school—at a sold-out Tabernacle show certainly doesn't hurt the Democratic gubernatorial nominee's chances. This is just a guess, but I doubt Gov. Nathan Deal has Southern Rock Opera on his iPod.

What Doesn’t Kill Me…The Life and Music of Vic Chesnutt, a film by Scott Stuckey, had its rough-cut premiere on Wednesday evening, Oct. 1 at Ciné, benefitting Nuçi’s Space. Attendees included a large number of luminaries from the Athens music scene, many of whom had worked with Chesnutt through the years, including Michael Stipe, members of Elf Power and producer John Keane. Stuckey and John “JoJo” Hermann, producer of the film and keyboardist of Widespread Panic, were on hand after the screening to answer questions and reminisce about their friend and beloved Athens musician, Vic Chesnutt. Stuckey and Hermann have been working on the project together since 2005, when Hermann was researching Chesnutt for his masters thesis.

I first stumbled onto Ty Segall in 2010 via two tracks from Melted on the Mondo Boysmixtapes put out by Athens alum and Aquarium Drunkard helmster Justin Gage. Since then, keeping up with Segall and friends’ (Mikal Cronin, Fuzz, Thee Oh Sees, Sic Alps) nonstop output of Northern California garage-punk-psych-metal has been like watching rabbits multiply, tricky to quantify and difficult to describe.
