    The theme of the 26th annual Boybutante Ball, a fundraiser for AIDS Athens, was "Dragvengers: Earth's Mightiest Sheroes," and the performers didn't disappoint. Flagpole's Joshua L. Jones was there to document the drag show Saturday night at the 40 Watt Club.

  • In the Loop: Herman Cain Defends Rand Paul in UGA Speech

    Herman Cain told University of Georgia students it is too early to make judgments about the 2016 presidential election, but advised them to discount candidates who attack members of their own party at a lecture Wednesday night.

    Cain, the former Godfather's Pizza CEO who unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination for the 2012 presidential race, recorded a segment for his radio talk show during his third visit to campus in the last four years. The show will be replayed next week.

    New downtown truck delivery zones seem to be "working well" two months in, Athens Downtown Development Authority director Pamela Thompson said Thursday. An evaluation is underway, but feedback so far has been positive, she told the Downtown Master Plan Committee.

  • Homedrone: Watch Kishi Bashi Perform on 'The Late Show with David Letterman'

    Athens resident, lover and internationally acclaimed pop singer-songwriter/violinist Kishi Bashi made his network television debut last night, when he and his band—which includes Mike Savino of NYC-based alt-folk outfit Tall Tall Trees—played "The Late Show with David Letterman."

    The group performed "Philosophize In It! Chemicalize With It!", the soaring lead single from last year's Lighght.

  • In the Loop: Kids Are Over-Tested, Education Expert Anthony Cody Tells Athens Parents

    Anthony Cody, a former Oakland, CA, teacher turned advocate for public education, told Clarke County public school parents Thursday that students are tested too much and don't get enough hands-on learning. 

    Cody toured local schools and spoke at a PTO meeting at Clarke Central High School, a day after giving a speech at the University of Georgia chapel.

    He was impressed by the horticulture program at Clarke Central Middle School, saying it will give the students an understanding of science and math that cannot be gained in a traditional classroom setting. Throughout the speech, Cody spoke highly of project-based learning, such as the horticultural program, as opposed to only testing students on knowledge.

    A beanie-clad audience braved the cold to see the coziest welcome-home party of the new year Friday, featuring one of the best lineups of folk-rock Athens has to offer.

    Semicircle was the first to take stage, setting the mood with minimalist instrumentals and an organically cool vibe. The group, which features two members of Reptar, announced that their newest album, Blown Breeze, Grown Grass and We Are Part of the Earth, (Flagpole reviewwas available on vinyl for the first time.

  • In the Loop: Protesters Stage 'Die-In' at Georgia Square Mall

    All over the country, activists have been staging "die-ins" to protest the deaths of Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, Trayvon Martin and other African American males at the hands of police. The local progressive group Athens for Everyone got in on the action Saturday at Georgia Square Mall, giving shoppers a little something to think about while they browsed for Christmas gifts.

  • Culture Briefs: Check Out Photos and Video from the Parade of Lights

    The Downtown Parade of Lights last night featured more than 60 floats, among them Monsoon rockin' out on the Flagpole/40 Watt Club/AthFest Educates: Athens Music float. But the talk of the town was Victory Chapel's rappers and crucified Jesus. (The church is best known for its legendary "rotisserie Jesus" float a few years back.)
