Philip Carpenter

Last week brought the terribly sad news that 23-year-old UGA student Philip Carpenter had been found dead in his downtown apartment. Carpenter, whom friends knew as Phil, was active in the Athens music community, as a singer-songwriter and member of bands like Colibri and Second Sons.

Friends, family and former bandmates will gather to celebrate Carpenter's life Friday on Friday, Mar. 6 at Nuçi's Space, where the young musician had participated in the Camp Amped program and worked as a volunteer. (The Banner-Herald reports that Carpenter also interned for the Drive-By Truckers.)

According to the Facebook event for the memorial, Strays, The Hernies and Second Sons will perform. There will also be an open mic portion of the evening. Doors are at 5 p.m., and the event is free and open to the public.
