Mark "Mojo" Wilmot, an Athens-area musician known for fronting the Americana band Redstone Ramblers, has died, according to posts on social media.
Wilmot's friend Fester Hagood, a fellow local musician who produced the Ramblers' 2015 album, Graveyard Gospel, remembered the guitarist on Facebook:
He was a masterful storyteller, scholar of history and the blues. He had a fine, seasoned voice that would dance between Hank Williams and Howling Wolf, and a unique, percussive style when he strummed his nylon string guitar.
Mary Nouri, the proprietor of No. 3 Railroad Street, where Wilmot hosted a monthly singer-songwriter series and the Ramblers were slated to perform this weekend, broke the sad news to subscribers in her weekly email newsletter, announcing plans for an impromptu memorial on Friday:
Mark leaves a legacy of friends, songs and memories that simply must not die. I will be at #3 Friday night. I can't imagine being anyplace else. If you'd like to drop by, please do. I'll have some munchies for you and a bit of the Ramblers' music on CD. Or, bring an instrument if you'd like to play a tune.
Flagpole's thoughts are with Wilmot's friends and family.
