We caught up with Jeff Montgomery, the proprietor of local-music respository Athensmusic.net and an organizer of Saturday's event who has helped throw a number of R.E.M. listening parties over the years.

In the Loop: Democrat Jonathan Wallace Launches State House Campaign

Jonathan Wallace hosted supporters across the street from the Oconee County Courthouse Saturday morning to kick off his campaign in the special election to fill Chuck Williams’ vacant District 119 seat.

Wallace, a software developer and member of the board of directors at the tech incubator Four Athens, spoke briefly, outlining some key advocacy points of his campaign, including internet and health care expansion and education reform.

"The state tried to take over the control of our locals schools," he told the crowd, referring to the controversial charter-schools amendment that was defeated at the ballot box last year. "That is unacceptable. Running for this position, I will fight to protect our public schools for our kids." Wallace called for an end to "high-stakes testing."

Culture Briefs: Rollergirls Host Classic City Crush This Weekend

When we last checked in with our local roller derby squad, skaters were taking the track to the familiar chug of “Crazy Train,” and for the next 60 minutes an alarmingly sparse but attentive crowd at the Classic Center witnessed a blizzard of quads. The visiting, and heavily favored, team from Baton Rouge jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, thanks to some deft jamming from Sparkles Fantastic, but they were shut out during their next three scoring attempts, and found themselves down 10 points after five minutes of play—and trailing by 15 at halftime.

In conjunction with this weekend's 35mm screenings of High Fidelity—the 2000 flick about the misanthropic owner of a struggling Chicago record store, played by John Cusack—Ciné will host a local record-label fair Saturday, July 8 from 1–7 p.m.

Several of Athens' finest indie labels will set up tables at the event for your browsing (and purchasing) pleasure, including HHBTM, Orange Twin, Marching Banana, Loud Baby Sounds, Nullzone, Fall Break, Gypsy Farm, Perfect Attendance and Plus 100. Might be a good time to pick up some of those new local records you've been meaning to buy?

Yeah, yeah, G-Day is tomorrow, but plenty is going on in Athens for those who are more interested in #resisting Trump than who's gonna be the Dawgs' third-string middle linebacker this fall.

Kick off the day with the Athens-Clarke County Democrats' monthly breakfast at 10 a.m. at First AME Church at the corner of Hull and Dougherty. UGA professor Richard Winfield will discuss universal basic income and publicly guaranteed employment.
