In the Loop: Whatever You Do, Stay Away from Campus Saturday

Football game days in Athens are always intense, but the Georgia-Alabama game this weekend has the potential to be pure pandemonium. Hide the women and children, board up your windows and hunker down.

“The high-profile 3:30 p.m. game in Sanford Stadium is expected to draw one of the largest crowds of the past couple years,” according to a UGA news release.

Culture Briefs: Canopy Fundraiser Gala Features Installation and Aerial Artists Saturday

Kevin Bates' home, located next door to Georgia Power, was presented with a 2015 Historic Preservation Award from the Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation.

This Saturday, Canopy Studio will hold its annual fundraiser gala at the historic Normaltown home of Kevin Bates. Admission includes food provided by chef Peter Dale of The National and local craft beer from the Southern Brewing Company. There will be trapeze performances by company members in the backyard, a DJ providing tunes for an inevitable dance party, and plenty of surprises throughout the night.

The sixth annual Hopscotch Music Festival happens Sept. 10–12 in Raleigh, NC. While music is still its heart and soul, Hopscotch has thoughtfully expanded into an event that is most accurately described as an aesthetic festival. In 2014, the organizers launched the Hopscotch Design Festival, which precedes the music event by a day, with a little overlap. This year, it'll happen Sept. 9 and 10.

Culture Briefs: Lyndon House Hosts Native American Art Symposium This Weekend

The Lyndon House Arts Center will host several artists and academic professionals in a symposium on contemporary Southeastern Native American art to compliment the center’s newest exhibition, “Return from Exile,” this Saturday, Aug. 29. “Return from Exile” will remain on view through Friday, Oct. 16, after which it will begin a two-year tour across the U.S. to universities, museums and tribal heritage sites. The symposium will be the only opportunity during the exhibition’s stint at the Lyndon House to meet and hear from the featured artists. Both the symposium and general exhibition will be free and open to the public.

At 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Fun Galaxy, the vintage (antique?) skating rink on Cherokee Road, offered no relief from the heat and humidity outside. The swampy space may have an AC, but from the feel of things inside, the Classic City Rollergirls were not allowed to touch the thermostat.

Athens musician Phelan LaVelle is one busy bee. In addition to fronting Shade, the excellent local groove-punk outfit that recently finished recording its sophomore album with Chase Park Transduction honcho David Barbe, she sings and plays bass in Crunchy, a similarly spaced-out rock and roll duo. On Saturday, June 27, she will debut Scrunchie, a Crunchy spin-off, as part of Go Bar's AthFest showcase.

In total, LaVelle's three projects will play five shows over the course of this weekend, which makes today a fine occasion to premiere the video for "DUOP," a stonerrific tune from Crunchy's upcoming Spicy World EP.
