White Tiger celebrates its 10th anniversary on Friday.

If you've been in Athens for more than a year, you know that April is the month in which any day of the week probably has 16 different events parked on it, from G-Day to Plantapalooza, Fluke, Insectival and so on.

This weekend kicks things off, with the following opportunities to eat and/or purchase the ingredients to make delicious food. You don't have to make it to everything, and there's probably no way you can.

Grub Notes: The National Is Catering an Oscar-Themed Fundraiser for Ciné

As y'all know (or should know), Ciné, our only art-house theater, is also a nonprofit, and like all nonprofits, it needs to raise money apart from ticket sales. It's partnering with My Athens to throw a three-course benefit catered by The National, with beers from Wild Heaven, this Saturday, Feb. 25, at 6:15 p.m. in the CinéLab.

In the Loop: Athens Mosque Hosts Open House Saturday

The Al-Huda Islamic Center will host an open house this Saturday from 11 a.m.–6 p.m.

“The timing is so crucial to give people a window to know about Islam,” said imam Adel Amer. “Actually the problem is with ignorance, we have to fight ignorance, and you won’t be able to form or crystalize an opinion about someone without reading about him, so instead of hearingabout us you’re going to hear from us. Because when you hear about us... the whole portrait will be the same color, or throw all the Muslims in the same basket, and that is not necessarily true. We have bad people, we have crazy people, like everybody else. But this is not the norm.”

An open house last January drew about 600 people, and Amer is expecting a drastic upswing in attendance this year.

In the Loop: Get Ready for Snowpocalypse 2017

Good thing they finally built the Brain Train, amirite?

The latest forecast from the National Weather Service predicts a mix of rain and sleet tonight and 1–3 inches of snow Saturday morning in Athens.

The UGA campus will close at 3:30 p.m., meaning all classes and other activities are canceled, and faculty and staff can go home early. Campus Transit shuts down at 4:30 p.m. The men's basketball game Saturday and the women's basketball game Sunday are still going on as planned, for the moment. Check here for updates.

In the Loop: UPDATE: The Chess and Community Conference Has Been Postponed

Local nonprofit Chess and Community will hold its annual conference Saturday from 10 a.m.–5 p.m. at UGA's Tate Student Center featuring a keynote speech from the mayor of Tallahassee, FL, and chess matches between Athens youth and police, UGA football players and county commissioners.

The conference will kick off with a welcome from Athens-Clarke County Manager Blaine Williams, followed by a speech by Andrew Gillum, who was elected to the Tallahassee City Commission at age 23 while a student at Florida A&M University and elected mayor in 2014. Attendees will also hear from Beau Shell, a young entrepreneur known as the Lil' Ice Cream Dude.

When Caleb Keith isn’t moonlighting as a country singer and songwriter, he’s a doctoral candidate at the University of Georgia’s Institute of Higher Education and the senior coordinator for assessment and research in the Department of Student Affairs, Assessment and Staff Development. A full-fledged Dawg who pursues his musical passions on the side, his life encompasses two different takes newcomers and outsiders have on the promises and opportunities of this tight-knit college town.

Keith will be chasing a different dream soon, once he relocates to Arkansas and begins a new career at the University of the Ozarks. In anticipation of his farewell show this Saturday at Flicker, Keith talked to Flagpole about his overall Athens experience.

Glynn County, GA has decided to Make Frat Beach Fratty Again. Sort of.

Authorities at the beach community that’s a notorious party spot for UGA students on the Georgia-Florida football weekend have decided to scale back the police presence after cracking down on rowdy students last year, the Golden Isles News reported.

Last year’s “zero tolerance” approach will still be in effect, but police won’t be out in force on St. Simons Island roads like they were last year.

“Last year may have been a bit of overkill,” County Commission Chairman Richard Strickland said last month, according to the News. “We were trying to get their attention, to make them understand. We appreciate them being here, but at the same time we have laws and we want you to behave yourselves. But we are more than happy to have them here.”

Last year, after getting fed up with partiers trashing the beach, Glynn County commissioners sent a stern letter to UGA and Florida students warning them to behave themselves. They didn’t this year. Apparently coastal merchants complained that the heavy police presence hurt their business.
