White Tiger celebrates its 10th anniversary on Friday.
If you've been in Athens for more than a year, you know that April is the month in which any day of the week probably has 16 different events parked on it, from G-Day to Plantapalooza, Fluke, Insectival and so on.
This weekend kicks things off, with the following opportunities to eat and/or purchase the ingredients to make delicious food. You don't have to make it to everything, and there's probably no way you can.
- White Tiger Gourmet is celebrating its 10th birthday tonight from 6–8 p.m., with paella and cake.
- Vesta Karen Baptist Church, in Carlton, is celebrating the conclusion of its building project with a party/fundraiser on Saturday, Apr. 1. The Karen are a Burmese ethnic minority who have been subject to repression by the Myanmar army. Many of them have fled to Canada and the United States, including Oglethorpe County. You can read Athens writer Andre Gallant's story on them in the Oxford American, which includes some descriptions of their cuisine. You can go help them out until 5 p.m. Saturday (the first link above should get you there) and expand your palate.
- Athens Farmers Market starts its 10th season on Saturday a.m. at Bishop Park and on Wednesday p.m. at Creature Comforts, downtown. The brewery is doing a special series of beers made with local produce from the market, available during the Wednesday night markets only. If you buy a tour on those nights, you'll also get $4 worth of tokens to spend at the market. Saturday will include goats, a cooking demo by the Campus Kitchen at UGA and live music.
- As far as other farmers markets go, you can mark your calendar for Apr. 29 for the first day of the West Broad Farmers Market; Comer's is already up and running; and Oconee's kicks off this Saturday morning, too. (Read about the joy of local farmers markets here.)
- Starting at 9 a.m. Saturday, you can see cool cars at Jittery Joe's Roasting Company, on Barber, as Cars and Coffee returns.
- Then, from 5–10 p.m., UGA's Indian Student Association is hosting its annual India Nite in the Tate Grand Hall on campus, with performances, a fashion show and food. Tickets are $7–$12.
- Sunday at 2 p.m., Seabear is hosting a release party for Stice Wine, a small winery in Napa, CA. Tickets are $10 without a T-shirt, $20 with one.
- On Monday, Apr. 3 at 6:30 p.m., Heirloom Cafe is hosting a dinner to benefit the Collective Harvest Fresh Food Fund, which lets low-income families subscribe to a CSA at half price. Tickets are $75 for four courses and drink pairings. Call 706-354-7901 for reservations. The menu is here.
