After putting in work for nearly a decade with Athens rockers Modern Skirts, Phillip Brantley debuted his new trio, Palace Doctor, with last year's Mangled LP. In contrast to the Skirts' sunny indie-pop, Palace Doctor—consisting of Brantley on guitar and vocals, plus Nick Robbins (Velveteen Pink) on bass and Jeremy Wheatley (Crooked Fingers) on drums—deals in a moody, muted brand of rock that incorporates strains of grunge, doo-wop and Americana.
Six months after its release, Mangled has proven to be a slow-grower of a record whose appeal becomes more evident with each listen. The group recently dropped a video for "There You Go," the album's propulsive eighth track.
"Ultimately, we wanted a visually striking performance video, and we chose 'There You Go' because of its driving, krautrock beat," says Brantley. "Local artist Jason Huffer developed several projections to superimpose on the band, which really gave the video a dark, psychedelic vibe. Huffer also shot and directed it."
