The organizers of Athens Slingshot, the upstart art, music and tech festival, have announced the initial lineup of featured performers for their second annual happening, which takes place Mar. 19–22.
In music, West African world-rock rebels Tinariwen will play the Georgia Theatre on Slingshot's opening day. Local pop heavyweight Kishi Bashi will also perform during the fest, as will Washed Out's Ernest Greene, who will spin a DJ set.
Other music events scheduled to happen include label showcases from Cloud Recordings (featuring Circulatory System, whose long-awaited third LP is set to drop this spring), New Granada and New West. Buzzy Virginia-based post-pop trio Eternal Summers will play. There will also be a "Japan Nite," featuring five of that country's "freshest acts," including beloved neon-punks Peelander-Z.
A slew of locals, including Hand Sand Hands, Cicada Rhythm, Monsoon, Velocirapture, The Goons, Adam Klein and the Wild Fires, Programs, The Dream Scene and Scab Queen, will also perform.
Elsewhere at Slingshot, comedian Doug Benson—he of Super High Me fame—will showcase his brand of dope-addled stand-up. Artist Tristan Perich will appear, along with performances of his 1-bit music by Sonic Generator. Quayola will show his digital renderings of masterworks, and Kota Ezawa’s animated video reinterpretations of pop culture will be featured in a large show of his work. Noted TED Talker Onyx Ashanti will present and perform.
This year’s Slingshot festival is also timed to coincide with the annual Eco-Focus Film Festival.
Early-bird tickets for the whole shebang are $25 and can be purchased from the Slingshot site (where you can also learn more about the scheduled performers). Much more is reportedly yet to be announced.
