So it seems like (knock wood) spring is finally here for real, which doesn't mean no more cold snaps but warm days should outnumber icky ones for a while. That also means it's time for the return of the Athens Farmers Market, which kicks off this season this Saturday (Apr. 6), starting at 8 a.m. in Bishop Park. Yes, there are some other places around town where you can get farm-fresh veggies, but AFM offers the largest variety. Jan Kozak writes, in the press release for this year's market, that some new vendors have joined the crew: Backyard Bread, The Comerian, The Bakery at Five Points (a ha! a sneak preview of the retail options to come), Journey Juice, Darby Farms (poultry, eggs, pork), Golden Ridge Farm (eggs), BG Farm (beef, pork, sausage) and Capra Gia Cheese Company. Wednesday evening markets downtown start next week, Apr. 10, from 4 to 7 p.m.
This weekend also promises G Day (as well as Fluke, Plantapalooza and about a zillion other events), UGA football's annual spring scrimmage, held in Sanford Stadium, with free entry for all. As part of the festivities, which involve lower-key tailgating, Athens Bagel Company is offering a tailgate special of a dozen bagels with chicken salad, egg salad, pimento cheese or cream cheese for $20, plus to-go carafes of coffee. Call ahead to order: 706-543-5001.
