Southern Brewing Co. Broke Ground Today

Another Athens brewery, Southern Brewing Co., broke ground this morning and is scheduled to open in May 2015.
Plans for the Collins Industrial Boulevard brewery (near Athens Tech) call for a beer garden, music venue, farmers market, artist market, bike trails, yeast lab and art camp. Like Terrapin and Creature Comforts, Southern Brewing Co. will offer tastings and tours.
Co-owner Brian Roth, an experienced homebrewer, made plans to start the brewery after an internship with local distributor Leon Farmer & Co. Partner Rick Goddard was a lobbyist for the Beer Institute.
Athens-Clarke County officials said they expedited Southern Brewing Co.'s permits because it's expected to employ 30 people. It also received a Small Business Development Center loan.
