I was, at one point, a pretty fervent Weakerthans fan, and some (maybe not-so) latent teenage part of me was thrilled by the fact that John K. Samson had recruited members of his former band to flesh out his latest solo record. Winter Wheat nods to Samson's past, but it was also one of two records released around election time (stay tuned for the other) that helped me cope with a troubled present and prepare for an uncertain future.

One could say—fine, I'm saying it—that the Athens music scene has east and west poles, not north and south: The 40 Watt Club at Washington and Pulaski, and Wuxtry Records at Clayton and College. At one of these places (or in the few blocks in between) is where most of the great music in this town has been made and heard for decades.
