    Friday, May 9

I arrived just in time to catch the last 30 minutes of The Whigs pound out a raucous set on the Ponce de Leon stage. “The Particular,” from their new record, Modern Creation, sounded especially sweet. It may have been mid-afternoon when the band rounded out its set, but a couple thousand fans doing the Tomahawk Chop in unison made it feel like a typical show at the 40 Watt. After the set, I caught up with the band to discuss their recent performanceon "The Late Show with David Letterman." Regarding the host's complimentary remarks about Athens, the group expressed humility. “We try to be good ambassadors to our hometown,” said Tim Deaux. Julian Dorio agreed: “We may be in Nashville now, but if Letterman says we’re from Athens, we’ll take it.” [DM]

I didn’t do a thorough investigation, but I’m willing to bet Charles Bradley was the oldest performer at Shaky Knees this year. Lucky for those posted up in front of the Ponce de Leon Stage, he was also one of the more impressive acts on the first day. Bradley and his band, The Extraordinares, don’t simply recall the iconic '60s and '70s soul acts; Bradley has a groove that is undeniably his own. [DM]

Dropkick Murphys broke through with "I'm Shipping Up to Boston," the emphatic, Celtic-tinged tune that scored The Departed and has been co-opted by many a film and television production since. The group's hooliganish steez is largely unchanged since its scrappy Warped Tour days, though it's become a decidedly more professional outfit; the band's heretical take on "Amazing Grace," complete with screeching bagpipes, cut through the muggy festival air with an odd sort of grace. • Hear a New Song from Reptar

    reptar_photo1.jpg

It seems like forever since we've heard new music from the local synth-pop miscreants inReptar. A quick check reveals that Body Faucet, the group's Vagrant debut (Flagpole review), came out a whole two years ago. That is, indeed, an eternity.

So it came as a pleasant surprise when member William Kennedy posted a link to the band's SoundCloud page on his Facebook page with the following comment:

wowwwweeeeee reptar's got some new musak yall fer de first time in a sec! the A-side of a soon to be released 7" on Quality Faucet Records its gonna be super k00l listen now

  • Flagpole Heads to Shaky Knees This Weekend

    Modest Mouse

This weekend, Friday, May 9–Sunday, May 11, the Shaky Knees Festival takes over Atlantic Station, the monolithic live-work-play development on the edge of Midtown Atlanta. It's the fest's first year in the current location, which will up its capacity by several thousand and no doubt increase its visibility in the region and beyond. (Read an interview with Shaky Knees founder Tim Sweetwood over at Creative Loafing.)

The ante has been appropriately upped when it comes to the lineup, too: Alongside indie rock heavyweights Modest Mouse, The National, The Hold Steady, Alabama Shakes and Spoon sit perennial oldster faves like the Violent Femmes and the reunited Replacements. (Several bands with Athens ties will perform at the fest and/or its associated afterparty shows, too, including Reptar, The Whigs and New Madrid.)

Peep the full lineup, much of which skews toward the increasingly overarching "Americana" genre, here. Headed to the fest? After the jump, check out our primer, where we list a few of the undercard acts you'd be a fool to miss.
