Touring is a risky endeavor. Aside from the possibility of facing shady promoters, ungracious audiences or vehicular failure, a cargo van packed with thousands of dollars in music gear is a prime target for would-be thieves.
Shortly after arriving in Austin, TX for SXSW on Saturday, Athens indie-rock band Dead Neighbors posted on Facebook that someone had stolen much of their equipment:
Yesterday, the group set up a GoFundMe page, hoping it could replace the stolen gear and continue its tour. Thankfully, the campaign surpassed its $1,000 goal by more than $300, and it appears that all systems, once again, are go: Dead Neighbors played the first of three planned SXSW shows last night.
Unfortunately, theft will always be an issue for touring bands—assholes are everywhere—but the incident stands as a reminder to be vigilant, and to take precautions, like insuring your equipment, before hitting the road.
