Don't Be a Dummy! This weekend's shows to see

Willie Nelson, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Sam Sniper, Dead Confederate and more!

It's Friday, and that means weekend, and that means lots and lots of great shows. Here's a new weekly roundup of stuff you should probably check out. Y'know, if you're into good music. We're calling it "Don't Be a Dummy!"

FRIDAY

Willie Nelson and Family @ Classic Center: The red-headed stranger rolls through town to play a sure-to-be exhaustive set of classics. It's Willie Nelson! You're a fool if you miss it.

Ray Wylie Hubbard, Matt Hudgins @ Melting Point: Then again, this is a tough call. How do you choose between two legends of outlaw country? If only we could combine these two shows into one.

Skatepark of Athens Benefit w/ Dead Confederate, Twin Tigers, Brothers, SheHeHe @ 40 Watt: Another in a series of benefit shows for the local shredder's hangout features some of Athens' most in-demand talent and an already beloved up-and-comer in SheHeHe.

Bill Mallonee, Olive Tree, Adam Klein @ Hendershot's Coffee Bar: Somewhat of an Athens legend, the Vigilantes of Love frontman returns to town with his wife Muriah Rose. Mallonee's based in Santa Fe these days, but once an Athenian… You never go back. Right? Is that how it works?

Ancient Whales, Kill Kill Buffalo, Timmy Tumble & The Tumblers, The Milkstains @ Farm 255: Former Athens resident Enoch Bledsoe brings his new band to town from Asheville. Loud, driving, vaguely psychedelic rock.

SATURDAY

Sam Sniper, Glossary, Tedo Stone @ 40 Watt: Local alt-country act Sam Sniper has been flying under the radar for a while, but expect big things from them in the months to come.

One Man Machine & the Powers That Be, Old Smokey @ Flicker Theatre & Bar: Bernard Pearce brings his rhythmic, psychedelic jams back to town from New Orleans.

The Barlettas @ Nowhere Bar: This new local band has been gigging steadily over the past few months and has put out a fine first release with their self-titled EP. Featuring shades of '60s rock, modern pop and a slight jam influence that's actually tasteful and works in the context of the songs. Other bands: take a cue.
