Grant Evans

Grant and Rachel Evans' relocation to the Athens area late last year was a needed shot in the arm for the local experimental music community. The duo possessed a dedication to their craft—evidenced by the rate at which they recorded and released new music, most of it coming via their Hooker Vision imprint—that seemed to send a wave of energy throughout the scene.

VAALD, Grant's new tape label, focuses on the darker side of ambient and noise, specializing particularly in harsh tones and decaying soundscapes. Roman Persuasion, Grant's new solo album out Sept. 10, falls in line with this aesthetic; its two vicious, crackling tracks show no mercy. It's not music for the faint of heart.

Says Grant: "[It was] recorded over the course of three months, after the death of a friend, using tape loops, homemade electronics, synthesizers and acoustic instruments."

Grant Evans plays Tuesday, Sept. 10 at Eyedrum in Atlanta.
