Today, Wuxtry Records—which celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2016—posted a list of its 20 best-selling albums of the year to the store's Facebook page.
Topping the list are three local acts: Eureka California, who dropped the excellent Versus in March; Mothers, whose When You Walk a Long Distance You Are Tired was Flagpole's No. 1 album of 2016; and former Star Room Boy (and ex-Flagpole news editor) Dave Marr, who released the terrific comeback record We Were All in Love in February.
Other local projects on the list—which features national top-sellers from Radiohead, David Bowie, Bon Iver, Angel Olsen and A Tribe Called Quest—include Kishi Bashi's Sonderlust, Pylon's Live, Drive-By Truckers' American Band and of Montreal's Innocence Reaches.
2016 was a year of overall growth for the music industry. According to a recent report from analytics firm BuzzAngle, vinyl sales were up nearly 26 percent compared to 2015, while CD sales dropped 14 percent. On the digital front, 2016 was a boom year for streaming services, with a record 250 billion streams representing an eye-popping 82 percent increase over the previous year.
