Welcome to Flagpole Premieres!, a recurring feature where we debut exclusive new material from local artists. Today, we're sharing a new tune from nightmare-pop outcasts Bubbly Mommy Gun.
The most surprising thing about "Fluid Dunces," the first single from Bubbly Mommy Gun's upcoming album Sand Roses (LOL: Bubbly Mommy GunSand Roses, get it???) is not that it's a nightmarish maelstrom of swirling keyboard and disembodied falsetto. That's to be expected from this gang of Zappa-obsessed weirdos led by Greg O'Connell, Charlie Key and the truly inimitable Mr. Mercer West.
What's truly shocking about the tune, and the album it's pulled from, is how together it all sounds. Anyone who's seen these guys live over the past few years knows that their shows are often tougher to follow than the plot of a "Lost" episode and almost as convoluted. But "Fluid Dunces" showcases a new BMG, one that ain't afraid to let the pop hooks really shine—even if they are relentlessly terrifying.
