Athens duo Cicada Rhythm released one of Flagpole's favorite local records of last year with the electrified Everywhere I Go, a cool and confident album that showcased the roots group's expanded palette. Today, we're excited to premiere another new Cicada Rhythm recording: the group's cover of Simon and Garfunkel's lovelorn pop song "Cecilia."

The tune, which is being released as part of the group's ongoing covers series, has been part of the band's live repertoire for years, as bassist Andrea DeMarcus explains:

It was hard at first to imagine Cecilia any other way when you consider the heavy percussive elements, but we put our twang on it, and as soon as we put it on the stage, people really responded. It’s been in our set for almost 3 years now. Simon and Garfunkel’s harmonies are so perfectly thought out and executed, and we aspire to that, so we mostly kept them as is, tweaking them here and there for a little bit of intensity.

"It’s just really fun to be able to play your favorite songs, and then also show off your style," DeMarcus says. "I hope we’re helping our listeners discover why they love the music they love all over again."

Cicada Rhythm plays the Georgia Theatre on Wednesday, May 8 with Nashville luminary Oliver Wood, who co-produced Everywhere I Go.
