Welcome to Flagpole Premieres!, a recurring feature where we debut new material from local artists. Today, we bring you a song and video from Grape Soda's debut LP.
Tomorrow (Tuesday, Nov. 6), local indie-pop duo Grape Soda will re-release its debut LP Form a Sign, via Kindercore. Below, watch an exclusive video for "The Spirit," a sweeping stunner that appears on the album.
The video's director, drummer Ryan Lewis, explains:
Back in 2010, Grape Soda was putting together a set for Heather McIntosh's AUX Fest. Having decided to try a show without drums, we spread our keyboards and gadgets out on the floor of Mat's bedroom (our practice space) and started poking around. During the poking I shot a bunch of video of our stuff and then promptly forgot all about it. Earlier this fall I was going through old footage and found this. For some reason, I got [to] thinking about our song "The Spirit." An hour or so later, I had made a video. Certainly not high-concept, but I think it captures the mood of the song, so I dig it.
Keyboardist and singer Mat Lewis on "The Spirit":
"The Spirit" is a bit of a departure for us, being the lone epic on Form a Sign. The drums, which are samples of Ryan playing that we recorded on an iPhone, don't come in until the end, and we focused more on the atmosphere of the track. It was a fun opportunity for us to branch out some, and definitely a glimpse of what the second album will sound like.
