Welcome to Flagpole Premieres!, a recurring feature where we debut exclusive new material from local artists. Today, we're sharing a new tune from folk songstress Madeline Adams.
"Not since Reagan has there been such a happy warrior," Madeline Adams sings on "Happy Warrior," her sweetly acerbic new neocon-baiting tune. The song, she explained at a recent live performance, is inspired by—and, with it's closing "fuck you," dedicated to—Republican vice-presidential nominee Paul Ryan, he of "method of conception" madness.
"Happy Warrior" is gleefully unsubtle, from its references to "An imaginary army of unborn baby angels/ With teeth as sharp as needles" to the title itself. With the tune, Adams seems to take on the role of Athens' melodi-political pied piper, calling the community to arms while unleashing a swift torrent of disdain onto the other side. It sure won't make everyone smile, but if this doesn't make you react in one way or another, you ain't been paying attention.
