Today Normaltown Records announced their latest signee: local outfit Ruby the RabbitFoot. The group, led by songwriter Ruby Kendrick, established itself with the No Weight No Chain LP, a solid collection of folky pop tunes that showcased Kendrick's airy sense of melody.
But if "Coffee & Honey," a video for which can be streamed below, is any indication, the band's Normaltown debut—said to be called New as Dew and out spring 2014—will be a vast departure for the group.
The brief but stirring song culls from some unforeseen sources—namely, '90s R&B and trip-hop—and showcases a far slinkier, sultrier version of Kendrick's songwriting than we've seen thus far.
File this one under unexpected delights:
The track, which I'm playing and playing on repeat and oh God why can't I stop, was produced by Kendrick and Emily Nelson and mixed by Drew Vandenberg.
Ruby the RabbitFoot is one of two local bands set to release their Normaltown debut next spring; the alt-folky New Madrid is the other.
