Like all downtown Athens watering holes, the popular bar and music venue Little Kings Shuffle Club has seen its share of unruly patrons over the years: The infamous patio pooper comes to mind, as does a recent incident in which a man attempted to steal money from a tip jar, was thrown out and responded by breaking one of the club's windows.
After a series of similarly unfortunate events last weekend—the first following the start of UGA's fall semester—the bar at the corner of Hancock Avenue and Hull Street will only admit customers who are aged 25 or older on Fridays and Saturdays. The change is effective immediately.
Specifics behind the reason for the new rule are unclear, though sources say they involve at least one bloody brawl. In an email to Flagpole, Little Kings co-owner Terri Silva says the change was motivated by "some trouble with some of the weekend patrons," adding that it's "a work in progress."
In a Facebook post dated Friday, Aug. 21, the bar advertised a liquor-company-sponsored promotional event where a limited number of customers were given free shots. Silva stresses that such events are common and that this one took place early in the evening, adding, "The people involved in the incident were not even there during the promo."
Tonight's scheduled dance party with DJs Mahogany and White Satin has been canceled, Little Kings announced in a Facebook post also noting the 25-and-up change. Judging by the comments on the post, many folks are unhappy with the new rule:
