RIP Athens Popfest

Athens Popfest, which returned in 2016 after a five-year hiatus and has occurred annually since, is done for good, according to a post on the organization's Facebook page and a graphic on the homepage of its website.

The festival, which began in 2004, featured eclectic lineups of local, regional and national touring artists and attracted attendees from far and wide.

Performers have included big indie-rock names like Guided by Voices, Superchunk, Deerhoof, The Mountain Goats, Throwing Muses, Ted Leo and the Pharamacists and Dean Wareham, in addition to cult-fave acts The Mummies, Pylon, ESG, Roky Erickson and others.

Popfest organizers have not yet issued an official statement beyond the social media posting.
