Filmmaker (and former Athens resident) Lance Bangs is working with Vice music blog Noisey on a Budweiser-sponsored video series titled "Made in America." Each episode spotlights a different U.S. city, with a particular focus on said city's music scene.
Last month, Bangs and crew journeyed to Athens to shoot footage for a Classic City episode. Today, Noisey premiered the end result.
In addition to chats with scene fixtures like Patterson Hood, Peter Buck, Andrew Rieger and Michael Lachowski, the video features archival footage of Athens in its E6 heyday, as well as interviews with and music from Reptar, Dream Boat, Shade, Five Eight and many others.
Though the episode dives deeply into the town's rise to national prominence in the '80s and '90s, there is unfortunately (if unsurprisingly) not much attention paid to what's going on now in Athens music. There is also a spirited conversation around the eight-minute mark about Flagpole's Music Directory, which, uh, no longer exists.
