Crank up the stereo and break out the bubbly: Wuxtry Records will celebrate 40 years in business next month.

The store, which opened Mar. 1, 1976, is one of two remaining record shops in downtown Athens—the other being Low Yo Yo Stuff—and the oldest Georgia record store still in operation, according to owner Dan Wall. Its employees over the years have included famous names like Brian "Danger Mouse" Burton and R.E.M.'s Peter Buck, among others.

Wuxtry's initial location was on Foundry Street, but it soon moved to the corner of College Avenue and Clayton Street, where its discount-vinyl Sidecar store now sits. In 1988, Wuxtry moved next door to the larger 197 E. Clayton St. space, where it still resides. Comics emporium Bizarro Wuxtry also opened that year, upstairs from the main storefront.

Wuxtry's Decatur store has served up vinyl, CDs and tapes to Atlanta-area customers for nearly as long; original co-owner Mark Methe opened the outpost in 1978.

A celebratory event featuring live music in honor of the local location's milestone is reportedly in the planning stages and details will be announced soon.
