Athens for Everyone will be picketing the Prince Avenue Wendy’s at 5:30 p.m. Friday, May 27 to pressure the fast-food chain into improving the treatment of farm workers.

The Athens Land Trust Is Raising Money to Keep Paying Student Farmers

The Athens Land Trust is raising funds to keep paying students who participate in the Young Urban Farmers program, which is on the chopping block in the Clarke County School District’s upcoming budget.
The program pays students—many of whom come from disadvantaged backgrounds—who work in the West Broad Market Garden.
ALT Executive Director Heather Benham said she met with program participants, and students “were not enthused” about receiving class credit rather than money.

CCSD Will Follow Letter on Transgender Students
Attorney General Loretta Lynch has harshly criticized North Carolina's "bathroom bill."
Gov. Nathan Deal issued a statement today criticizing a recent Obama Administration letter to school districts urging them to allow transgender students to use the restroom corresponding to the gender they identify as, but the Clarke County School District will comply with the letter.
The U.S. justice and education departments provided “guidance” to districts last Friday that discriminating against students whose gender identify differs from the biological sex they were assigned at birth violates the federal Title XI law.

Openness Is an Issue in Oconee Races

Oconee County Commission Chairman said the idea of building a sewer line for a poultry plant was merely hypothetical, but a poultry company has in fact expressed interest in locating in Oconee.
The two candidates running as outsiders in the Oconee County Board of Commissioners contest have made transparency and openness in government a key issue.
At the last Board of Commissioners meeting on May 3, Commission Chairman Melvin Davis gave them the perfect illustration of the problem they are addressing.
With the other three commissioners sitting by, Davis told what is certainly a fabrication to a citizen who also made a misstatement about a poultry processing plant.
Davis told Barb Carroll that references to a poultry plant were just an “example” and that nothing concrete has come before the county.
That clearly is incorrect, as Oconee County Utility Department Director Wayne Haynie told the county's Industrial Development Authority in April, with Davis present, that the county was in discussions with a poultry concern.
Haynie said the same thing to the Board of Commissioners on several occasions, starting as early as Jan. 26.

Athens for Everyone Endorses John Knox for BOE
Athens for Everyone—the progressive group that grew out of Tim Denson's 2014 mayoral campaign—has endorsed UGA geography professor John Knox for District 8 on the Clarke County Board of Education.
Knox is running against Kamau Hull, a local attorney, for the vacant seat representing the Eastside. Hull apparently impressed A4E as well, but they're siding with Knox nonetheless.

The Pope on Prince Is Leaving Prince
The Pope on Prince is about to become the Pope on Jackson when it moves into Community’s former space at 119 N. Jackson St., above the downtown Jittery Joe’s.
Monica Bischoff, owner of The Pope, said the rent for her current space above Daily Groceries is too high. The space downtown will cost much less and has steady pedestrian traffic, and she doesn’t have to deal with the steep stairs that lead to her current store getting slippery and dangerous during rain. The downtown space also has central air conditioning, while the current Pope is equipped with window units only.
“I don’t think that Prince Avenue is good for retail,” Bischoff said. “The foot traffic here is awful, crossing Prince may cost you your life, and I’m not making any money.
