Welcome to Athens Power Rankings. In the spirit of sports rating systems, through painstaking analysis, we rank the top movers and shakers in the Classic City each week. Who's hot? Who's not? Find out below.
1. Lady Bulldogs swim team
The Lady Dawgs won their fifth consecutive SEC championship Saturday, becoming only the second program to repeat that many times. There must be something in the water.
2. New Madrid
The local band is enjoying a wave of critical support for its upcoming Normaltown Records debut, which it celebrates with a release show at New Earth this weekend. Ya done good, boys.
3. Jere Morehead
UGA's prez rejected Tea Party protests of the school's ACA navigator program and continues to oppose the bill that would decriminalize carrying a gun on campus. All of which begs a rather terrifying question: Is the guy Flagpole once hailed as a "competent administrator" actually one of the most progressive folks in current local leadership?
4. Casper and the Cookies
The long-running indie-pop group hailed the release of its fourth LP with an outta-this-world show at Caledonia Lounge Friday.
5. Jack Crowley
The UGA prof is practically done with his much-anticipated downtown master plan, which he'll present to the ADDA next month. His biggest hurdle? Beer.
