University of Georgia President Jere Morehead is donating a big chunk of his $250,000 pay raise to a new scholarship endowment, the university announced today.

The Board of Regents voted last month to give Morehead a 43 percent pay raise, from $567,380 to $811,374, sparking outrage from many students who will be paying 9 percent higher tuition this fall, as well as university employees who are due for much smaller raises after years of none at all.

The $100,000 donation will go toward Morehead's new "experiential learning initiative," an undergraduate requirement starting in fall 2016. The requirement can be met through research, study abroad, service learning, internships and "other high-impact experiences," according to a UGA news release.

Morehead also makes annual contributions to the the honors program, the law school (where he graduated and previously served as dean) and a needs-based scholarship fund for students who spend a semester in Washington, D.C.
