You’re probably going to watch the presidential debate tonight. Let’s be honest: No matter where you are on the political spectrum, it’s going to be depressing, and you’re going to need gallons of booze to get through it. Unless you want to end up sobbing on the floor by yourself like Martin Sheen at the beginning of Apocalypse Now, maybe it’s best to go out in public. Here are some options:
• Clarke County Democrats are hosting a debate-watching party starting at 7 p.m. at the Cotton Press, in the Chase Park warehouses. Speakers include former gubernatorial candidate Jason Carter, House Minority Leader Stacey Abrams, former congressman John Barrow, Mayor Nancy Denson and state Rep. Spencer Frye. Tickets are $50 and include dinner and two drinks (which is not nearly enough).
• At the Russell Library, political science professor Paul Gurian will give a talk at 8:30 p.m., a half-hour before the debate is aired.
• Capitol Steps, a comedy troupe made up of former congressional staffers, performs at 7 p.m. at Hugh Hodgson Hall. (You gotta laugh to keep from crying.) Afterwards, head over to the Ramsey Concert Hall to watch the debate.
• The Tate Student Center Theater will show the debate on the big screen. Doors open at 8:30 p.m.
• If you’d prefer to stay away from millennials who are all probably gonna vote for Gary Johnson anyway, the Georgia Theatre is putting the debate up on its big screen, too. When you get to the point where you can’t take it anymore, Florida punks Merchandise and Brooklyn’s Public Memory are playing on the rooftop.
• At Go Bar, debate host Benjamin Elliot Rice will “trash Tiny Hands while he makes that sphincter noise with his mouth for the entire debate.” Delightful!
• Or drown your sorrows in craft beer at Hi-Lo, where local drag queen Ming Vase will serve as emcee.
