A Peculiar Noise, a new documentary about the Athens music scene, will have its official premiere Saturday, Apr. 2 at the Atlanta Film Festival, when it screens at 7 Stages Theatre at 7:30 p.m.
Directed by onetime Athenian Jorge Torres-Torres, the film takes its name from an Olivia Tremor Control song and "documents the past and present of DIY underground music in Athens, GA," according to the festival's description.
Torres-Torres tells Creative Loafing that the film draws on his experience in Athens in the early aughts, when the Elephant 6 collective's influence was in full swing:
"I was introduced to the Elephant 6 in the late '90s. It was this collective experience, where Elf Power or Olivia Tremor Control would play with Neutral Milk Hotel, and both bands were sharing members. A different configuration, but they'd have the same spirit. … Everybody becomes friends with everybody," he says of his early days in Athens.
