The sad word spread around town this evening that Carl Lindberg, a well known and highly respected Athens musician known for his work with groups like Grogus, Old Skool Trio and Squat, has died.

Flagpole has not yet been able to confirm the cause of death, but tributes have begun pouring in on Lindberg's Facebook page.

Lindberg had been creatively active of late. In addition to performing with the jazz-funk outfit Old Skool Trio, which landed on this year's Flagpole Athens Music Awards ballot, the bassist was scheduled to appear as part of this weekend's Athens Jazz Festival.

WUGA-FM, the organizing force behind the festival, which was to take place Saturday at UGA's Georgia Center for Continuing Education, announced on Facebook Thursday night that the event has been postponed.

In addition to his musical career, Lindberg operated the Hu Kung Fu Chinese martial arts studio.

We will update this post as details continue to emerge. For now, our thoughts are with Lindberg's friends and loved ones, especially his wife and young daughter.

UPDATE: A memorial service has been scheduled for Sunday, May 17 at 2 p.m. at the UGA Chapel, according to Lindberg's friend and bandmate Seth Hendershot. From Hendershot's Facebook post:

Carl's brother-in-law Jeremy French will direct the speeches followed by a short musical presentation and a 2nd line New Orleans-style march out the door and onto the grassy, beautiful North Campus lawn. A reverent gathering will happen at Roots Farm and a more social and relaxed gathering will happen at Hendershot's Coffee following the memorial.
