This week, we published a list of our 17 favorite local albums of 2017, which you should make a point to dig into while knocking back a few 'nogs over the holiday break.
For the fun of it—and because lists!—here are my top 10 non-local records of the year, with accompanying audio. You can also check out this Spotify playlist that includes a bunch of my favorite songs of the year.

When he's not charting cosmic sonic territory with Future Ape Tapes, Athens musician Donald Whitehead is laying down loose, lucid psych-rap grooves as Space Brother, which Flagpole's Gordon Lamb called "a nice counterpoint to the not entirely post-hip-hop, but definitely wide-open experimentalism of the Apes."

Of all the bright spots on this year's 7-0 Georgia Bulldogs football team, none has been more meme-worthy than Rodrigo "Godrigo" Blankenship, the bespectacled redshirt sophomore kicker from Marietta whose unkempt-Clark-Kent appearance and swaggy demeanor have made him a fast fan favorite.

We caught up with Jeff Montgomery, the proprietor of local-music respository Athensmusic.net and an organizer of Saturday's event who has helped throw a number of R.E.M. listening parties over the years.
If there were an award for hardest-working rock band in Athens, it'd surely go to Deep State. The pop-punk four-piece has seemingly remained on the road since releasing the excellent Thought Garden in April, and it's somehow found time to begin prepping another new LP, reportedly titled The Path to Fast Oblivion.

Local singer-songwriter Timi Conley is perhaps best known as the founder and spiritual ambassador of the annual Wild Rumpus celebration, but Athenians also know him for his tireless exploration of the funky far reaches of pop. With Kite to the Moon and, more recently, Timi & Wonderland Rangers, Conley crafts thoughtful, ecstatic music designed to make crowds move.
