Saturday night, if you had picked the right entrance at the Classic Center, you’d be rewarded with the chance to crash a small, hopeful wedding before dodging a large contingent of tandem bicycle enthusiasts from around the world attending a mixer in the hallway. Evidently these narrow, two walled spaces can be leased. For your next awkward event.
Finally, in a ballroom that wasn’t hosting a high school graduation ceremony, there was roller derby.
“I Want to Be in Pictures”, a workshop offered at the ACC Library on Thursday, May 29, offered a glimpse into life on the film set and provided tips on how to become and succeed as a movie extra.
The 2014 season is officially in full swing for our hometown Classic City Rollergirls. Since we last checked in with the ladies in green and black, they’ve played three exciting bouts far away from the friendly confines of the Classic Center.
CCRG’s road trip began May 3 at the Columbia County Exhibition Center just outside of Augusta, where they participated in the six-team Low Down Throw Down tournament. The team had the unenviable task of getting fired up for a 10 a.m. bout against the hostess Soul City Sirens. Maybe they should schedule all their bouts just after breakfast. CCRG, led by the MVP-jamming of Louis Strongarm and an impressive performance from newcomer Phat Amy, dispatched of Augusta 170-116, in an amazing, come-from-behind victory. The team trailed by as many as 38 points early in the bout but refused to quit.
Unfortunately the ladies tasted not only the thrill of victory but also the agony of defeat in Augusta. Birmingham-based Tragic City Rollers, led by stand-out jammer (and maybe total psycho) Mad Villain along with some bulldozing, lane-opening blocking from Eiffel Power, defeated Classic City 96-75 in a grinding, defensive battle. Being the second half of a double-header, fatigue was obviously a factor for both teams.
More after the jump.
Atlanta artist Sean Bourne, who graduated from the Lamar Dodd School of Art in 1980, is the mastermind behind the Art Rocks Athens show “Paper Covers Rock,” which opened at the Lyndon House on Sunday, May 25. The craftily titled exhibit documents the graphic art used to promote Athens bands from 1975-1985.
Frequent squeals of recognition, as old friends saw each other for the first time in many years, were a big part of the well attended opening for “Between Rock and an Art Place” at the Lamar Dodd School of Art on Friday night, May 23. The exhibit, part of the ongoing work of the Art Rocks Athens Foundation, documents the art created by artists working and studying at UGA between 1975 and 1985, many of whom were also actively involved in the well-known music scene of the same era.

The Eclectic Works of Aaron Fu is an apt description of the artworks currently on offer at Artini’s in downtown Athens. “Eclectic” also describes the show’s engaging opening held there on May 22. In addition to the variety of works by Fu on display, attendees were treated to spoken word performances by Athens Writers Association members Rob White and Elsa Russo and a set by the Americana band the Darnell Boys.
Legendary comedian Bill Cosby is coming to the zip zop wop Classic Center in October! Flibbity bobbity!
Otis Redding III, guitarist, vocalist and son of Otis Redding, stopped by Athens last week to lay down a track at Studio 1093.
