In a rare moment of national pride and in celebration of our socialist roots, a mostly bewildered Flagpole staff has decided to live-tweet this game other countries mistakenly call "football."
Plenty of Athens residents played hooky Thursday to watch the U.S. advance to the knockout round in the World Cup in spite of a 1–0 loss to Germany, thanks to Portugal's win over Ghana. Flagpole photo intern Joshua L. Jones was on the scene.
Kyle Kinane is no stranger to Athens, having performed here several times over the course of the last few years. So it came as no shock (though it's still pretty damn cool news) when the hirsute, gruff-voiced comedian announced on his Tumblr that he will record a new television special at the 40 Watt Club later this summer.
Word comes down from organizer Chris Patton that Sean Patton (no relation), the Brooklyn-based comedian who was scheduled to headline Wednesday's LaughFest showcase at the Georgia Theatre, has dropped off the bill due to a scheduling conflict.
Taking his place is Clayton English, an Atlanta stand-up and actor who has been seen on shows like "Tyler Perry's House of Payne" and in films such as The Preacher’s Kid.

Last Saturday morning, the Classic City Rollergirls caravanned through the North Georgia hills and Cumberland Plateau, over more than 230 rural highway miles, to face the heavily favored Dixie Derby Girls in Huntsville, AL. CCRG lost by five points in a heartbreaker to Dixie last season in Athens. When the team took the concrete track shortly after 6 p.m. at the National Speleological Society Conference Center, they showed no signs of being road-weary—or the least bit intimidated.
Both squads went scoreless in the evening’s first jam, setting the tone for the entire bout. These were defensive-minded, physical skaters, unafraid to mix it up in the pack. Classic City quickly acclimated themselves to the opposition and track conditions. High Jinxxx scored seven hard-earned points during her second jam, followed by an impressive 14-point scoring effort by pivot Elizabeth Impaler after jammer Louis Strongarm had the presence of mind to pass the scoring star to her teammate.
For the past few months, Flagpole Music Editor Gabe Vodicka and I have been having a really good time blogging about and making fun of "Party Down South," the CMT reality show about eight self-described rednecks slowly killing themselves with alcohol, Leaving Las Vegas style.
We sent writer Rashaun Ellis to find out what indignities the cast had inflicted upon themselves and our fair city while filming season 2 in Athens, which Rashaun (jokingly, I thought) treated as some kind of punishment. Gabe and I thought we'd recap each episode, starting with the first one on Thursday. "It'll be fun!" we told ourselves. No. Because "Party Down South" is the single most depressing and cynical thing I've ever seen in my whole life, and this will probably be the last thing we ever write about it. Seriously. It's that bad. Don't watch it. Not even ironically.
