Taste of Athens Has New Flavor
American Winter, an HBO documentary about social services in Portland, OR, is a terrifying look at just how quickly the upper-middle and working classes alike can slip into poverty and homelessness.
Community Connection screened the film Sunday to kick off its revamped Taste of Athens. The Feb. 22 event will be scaled back considerably, moving from the Classic Center Grand Hall to the atrium, allowing the 20-plus participating chefs to focus on food and hospitality, rather than simply feeding 2,000 people.
A new event, Toast of Athens, a cocktail competition, will be added next year. Bartenders from eight local watering holes will compete to see who makes the best libation in town.

Freshtopia Is Closed, Get Yourself on the Tee-Vee and More
Food Network Star
After opening Sept. 19, Freshtopia, Achim Reus' newest project, a bistro in the Ansonborough development on Gaines School Road is, um, closed. Reus confirmed but hasn't given a reason or any thoughts on the matter yet.
Over in the ATL, Food Network is casting for "Food Network Star" this Sunday from 10 a.m.–1 p.m. at the W Atlanta Downtown. More info is available on the casting company's website.

After closing in Watkinsville, Kumquat Mae bakery/eatery will reopen tomorrow (Nov. 1) in the Arbor building on Mitchell Bridge Road, starting at 9 a.m. You can check out the menu on its website, which ranges from eggs benedict to pizzas and cheeseburgers.

Olive Basket to Open in the Bottleworks, American Deli on West Broad
Sometimes it seems like Flagpole is The Bottleworks Times, but it ain't our fault—or even due to our location—that we cover the mixed-use development frequently. The new owners have done a fine job attracting businesses, and the newest is set to open Saturday, Nov. 1 (grand opening Nov. 8) next to Seabear Oyster Bar.
