Thursday evening, the 2018 Flagpole Athens Music Awards was held at the historic Morton Theatre. Hosted by local hip-hop artist and political activist Linqua Franqa, the evening was a spectacular success. Local musicians and artists received awards in 21 categories, including Jazz/World, Punk, Hip Hop, Live and Studio Engineer and Artist of the Year, to name a few.

I got the call at 5:04 p.m. on June 4. The voice on the other end of the line was alerting me that my tickets for Canadian country-music superstar Shania Twain's appearance at Duluth's Infinite Energy Arena were secure and waiting at will call for me. So, of course, the first thing I did was start calling around trying to find someone who understood this was a not-to-be-missed situation. First call? Dinner plans. Second call? Band practice. Third call? "Aw, Gordon, thanks but… really?"
Tweed Recording Academy, a new school offering "cutting-edge audio engineering and mixing programs," plans to open in downtown Athens in fall 2019, according to a press release. The school will occupy the former Lamar Lewis Shoe Store building, which spans the block from Clayton Street to Washington Street and also includes the former Copper Creek brewpub.
