Legendary Athens band The B-52s put a rockabilly spin on David Allen Coe’s country downer of a theme song for this week’s episode of “Squidbillies,” airing Sunday at 11:30 p.m. on Cartoon Network.
For the uninitiated, “Squidbillies” follows a family of, yes, hillbilly squid led by paterfamilias Early Cuyler and their shotgun-and-party-liquor-fueled shenanigans in a thinly disguised version of Douglas County, GA.
Here’s the upcoming episode’s title sequence:
It's been many moons since we've gotten to enjoy a new Cinemechanica studio recording. The Athens math-rock band's most recent release is 2008's Rivals EP; its last full-length, The Martial Arts, came out way back in 2006. Thankfully, the group is set to make up for its lengthy absence with the self-titled Cinemechanica, out Sept. 23 via Arrowhawk Records.

With his Pity Party series, local videographer Taylor Chicoine has brought the Athens DIY spirit to the web, filming local and touring bands in a house-show setting and posting the clips online for all to see. In addition to the videos, Chicoine has expanded the Pity Party brand to include home recording and more.
Over the course of its several-year existence, Athens-based "Amerigrass" project Grassland String Band has evolved from a straightahead bluegrass outfit into something more nuanced and compelling. The transition is solidified with the group's new EP, The Echo Mountain Sessions, recorded in Asheville, NC last January.
Today we're pleased to premiere "Diamond," the first single from the upcoming EP. The song, which features contributions from Hammond B3 master Ike Stubblefield, was penned by GSB's Michael Lesousky.

Tug is a new local band that, even in its relative infancy, is already one of the more exciting prospects for the future of Athens punk scene. The sort-of supergroup is made up of three longtime local musicians: former Tonda leader Dick Hunsinger, Art Contest’s Garrett Burke and Monsoon’s Emmett Cappi. Their set at the 40 Watt Friday could be best described as a mix of experimental noise rock, traditional hardcore and metal. Cappi, though mostly known as a supporting player in past projects, shined as he took on the role of lead singer. His energy was the kind of stuff you only see in a band’s earliest days, as if he has been waiting years to get this intensity out in the open. Hunsinger continues to be one of the best instrumental musicians in Athens; his guitar playing in Tug is as powerful as it has ever been. Burke’s math-rock drumming skills translate fine to Tug’s harsher sound. Though I’m not sure if they would appreciate the comparison, Tug’s ability to blend a large variety of genres into a sound this accessible and genuine calls to mind the likes of ambient noise-metal megastars Deafheaven. While Tug’s recent EP, Cover the Earth, is a decent introduction to the band’s sound, its live set is required listening. [Nathan Kerce]
