There are bound to be plenty of great live-music options for New Year's Eve this year, but one show has shot quickly to the front of the pack. On Dec. 31, four of Athens' most currently essential local groups—New Madrid, Muuy Biien, Mothers and Grand Vapids—will join forces to rock the 40 Watt Club.
To announce the show, organizers put together this bitchin' GIF:
Last month, Athens alt-country troubadour Adam Klein released Archer's Arrow, his sixth album. The record, a collaboration with now-defunct Athens band Nutria, had been in the works since 2010; Klein shelved the project for several years, releasing Sky Blue DeVille with his live band, The Wild Fires, in 2013.
Legendary post-punk act Gang of Four plays the 40 Watt Club tonight, and we've got two pairs of tickets to give away. To enter, tell us why you deserve to go for free in the comments below. We'll choose two winners at 4:30 p.m.
Join us in welcoming Art Contest to Athens.
The duo, which recently relocated to the Classic City from just up the road in Greenville, SC, specializes in twitchy, explosive math-pop, of which we haven't seen much around these parts since the mid-aughts.
Psych-pop pseudo-cult The Polyphonic Spree plays Georgia Theatre tonight (Friday, Oct. 23) to play its debut 2002 album, The Beginning Stages of…, in its entirety.
Though Athens-born jam-band juggernaut Widespread Panic continues to tour nearly constantly and regularly hosts a two-night New Year's Eve stand in Atlanta, the group rarely plays its hometown. Since the (in)famous Panic in the Streets concert in 1998, which brought nearly 100,000 people to downtown, Panic has only played Athens a handful of times—most recently in 2011, when it headlined the newly renovated Georgia Theatre.

Antlered Aunt Lord, the slow-simmering local garage-pop project led by songwriter Jesse Stinnard (also of Tunabunny fame), is all set to release its Ostensibly Formerly Stunted (and on fire) LP Nov. 20 via HHBTM. Today, we're tickled pink to provide y'all with a first taste of the LP via the video for "The Beezwax," the record's fuzz-forward, steadfastly hummable lead single.

The 2015 edition of Athens Intensified took place last weekend at several downtown venues. Below, a few of two Flagpole writers' highlights of the festival:
