Classic City Crush Recap

Day One: Saturday, June 18
When Albuquerque, NM-based Duke City took the track against Marietta's Peach State at 10 a.m. Saturday to kick off the 2016 Classic City Crush, they were confident the most stressful and frightening events of the weekend were already behind them. Their flight to Georgia was rerouted to Chattanooga due to severe weather. They taxied the runway in Tennessee until conditions improved in Atlanta, where they eventually commandeered ground transportation for Athens. Arriving eight hours late, they did not benefit from a good night’s sleep, nor did they have time for sightseeing. (The Tree That Owns Itself will be there until we replace it again.)

Hairspray: A celebration of early ’60s dance music, social change and teen dreams, Hairsprayis a happy, Tony Award-winning musical about an outrageously optimistic dance show fanatic named Tracy Turnblad (Georgia Laster). She’s described as “pleasantly plump” and gets in trouble at school for “inappropriate hair height,” but she dreams of appearing on “The Corny Collins Show.”

What's Happening in Local Theater This Weekend
Our Town It’s the final weekend of an American classic at Winder Barrow Community Theatre, directed by Léland Downs Karas. Thornton Wilder’s Our Town won a Pulitzer Prize in 1938; when it was revived in 1989 it won a Drama Desk Award and a Tony Award. The masterfully metatheatrical script sets the play in a theater rather than a place, though the theater stands for a fictional town called Grover’s Corners.

Double Dutch Press Will Close in June
Double Dutch Press, the fine art printmaking studio founded in 2012 by Amanda Burk and Katherine McGuire, has announced plans to close its storefront at the end of June. Operating “straight outta Normaltown,” the studio has offered press rental, screen services and numerous workshops over the past few years. In addition to designing handmade items that have made popular gifts at craft markets, the duo has also showcased multiple series of prints in exhibitions, such as the “Athens Neighborhood” collection which will open at the Lyndon House Arts Center this upcoming Thursday.
Burk and McGuire intend to continue creating and selling art, and the sad news does at least come with a bit of positive news; Indie South Fair will officially take over the Prince Avenue space to establish a brick-and-mortar headquarters offering handmade and vintage items, consultation services and workshops. Approaching its 10th anniversary this December, Indie South has demonstrated remarkable growth, expanding into a 100-vendor biannual market with smaller-scale events held throughout the year in Athens and across the Southeast.

Young Designers Shine on the Runway at Annual Fashion Show
Sewing machines and sergers hummed furiously last week, as a group of girls in T-shirts and jeans stitched, pinned and appliquéd in a mad dash to be ready for a fashion show. A week later, these same girls, made up and creatively attired in elegant dresses and stylish outfits, cooly and confidently walked the runway between dining tables at the Athens Country Club.
The girls are members of the Young Designers Sewing Program. The 4–12 graders meet twice a week after school from August to May to design and sew garments in preparation for an annual fashion show.

Kirby Smart Is Already Sweating His Job
ESPN.com published a profile today of Georgia’s new football coach, Kirby Smart. The takeaway is Smart knows the Dawg Nation is antsy, and he’s gonna get fired if he doesn’t win an SEC championship in the next couple of years.
