Last week's live cinecast of the NPR game show Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me!, seen locally at Beechwood Stadium 11, was the latest edition of the curious trend of watching radio. This American Life has broadcasted the taping of its show, and popular NPR variety shows A Prairie Home Companion, Mountain Stage and even Wait, Wait sell plenty of tickets to a studio or amphitheater audience. However, the difference between participating in the taping of a radio show and watching it remotely is large enough that these live cinecasts might not become the lucrative novelty they at first seem.
Craving kale? Lusting after lettuce? Got a yen for yams? In addition to the Athens Farmers Market every Saturday morning at Bishop Park, you now have another option to satisfy your hunger for locally-grown, organic produce.
The West Broad Farmers Market opens at 10 a.m. Saturday at the (kinda hard-to-find) old West Broad School, located at the corner of West Broad and Minor streets, just before the intersection with Hancock Avenue if you're coming from downtown. Here's the lowdown from the Athens Land Trust:
The number of University of Georgia students who are, it is implied, having sex with rich, older men for money has increased by 163 percent in the past year. Let's hope it's gone from like eight to 21.
That's according to a website that matches female "sugar babies" (ugh) with "sugar daddies" who give them an average of $3,000 a month, ostensibly for books and tuition. UGA's gotten more expensive, but it ain't that expensive.
Tonight, Flicker Theatre & Bar, in association with FilmAthens, presents a screening of all the entries in the 24 Hour-ish Scavenger Film Festival. Each participating team created an under-seven-minute film that had to follow three guidelines: utilize a designated prop, include a given piece of dialogue and a secret third requirement.
The audience and judges' favorites will receive cash prizes (disclaimer: I'm one of the four judges). The screenings begin at 10 p.m., and the event is FREE. You know what to do.
Red Bull is sponsoring a chariot race today as part of Twilight weekend. It starts at 7 p.m. on Clayton Street "between N. Lumpkin and N. Jackson" (so I guess College Avenue?) if you're looking for some "elite partying," whatever that means.
Here's the press release they sent us. The bastards pre-empted my Animal House joke.
You may have noticed an increased level of activity on the westernmost block of Washington Street over the last day or two. It all owes to the Adult Swim Funhouse, a mysterious new venture from the hip, Atlanta-based Turner subsidiary, which makes its debut in Athens this weekend.
From the press release:
Free tickets for the Athens Symphony Pops Concerts, which will be held May 3 and 4 at the Classic Center, will be available starting Monday, Apr. 22 at the Center's box office. The two concerts, both of which will begin at 8 p.m., will mark the closing of the Athens Symphony Orchestra's 2012-2013 season.
From the press release:
NBC weatherman/weirdo freakazoid Al Roker was set to deliver the 2013 Holmes-Hunter Lecture back in February, but a nasty snowstorm sidelined him. (Yeah, I really do think.) Now, the university has announced that the event has been rescheduled for Thursday, Apr. 25 at 2:30 p.m. in the UGA Chapel.
