As usual, the Tate Student Center Theater's fall movie lineup is a mix of classics like Nashville and recent hits like Iron Man 3.
The Spectacular Now, which opens today in L.A. and New York, is not Athens native James Ponsoldt's first feature-length film (it's his third, following 2006's Off the Black and last year's Smashed) but it's by far his most personal. Set in Ponsoldt's hometown, and shot here last summer, the movie documents a budding high-school relationship. But it's no breezy teen rom-com, having already earned rave reviews from outlets like The New Yorker.
In hopes of expanding after the inaugural festival last year, the Athens Slingshot festival is applying for a $15,000 state economic development grant.
After winning big at Sundance earlier this year, Athens native James Ponsoldt's coming-of-age tale The Spectacular Now is set to open in Los Angeles and New York City this Friday.
Shot entirely in Athens, the movie stars Shailene Woodley (The Descendents) and Kyle Chandler ("Friday Night Lights"), among others, and tells the story of an improbable teen romance. The film is already garnering rave reviews from influential critics, like New York Magazine's David Edelstein and The New Yorker's David Denby.
The application period for AthFest Educates mini-grants for music and arts starts Thursday, Aug. 1 and runs through Friday, Aug. 9.

In the slim chance it's not the only thing on your Facebook timeline right now, we thought we'd alert you to this new New York Times travel feature titled, "In Athens, Ga., a Downtown Renaissance."
The six-frame slideshow cites several local businesses—including The World Famous, Community and The Branded Butcher—as evidence of Athens' cultural uprising. The town "feels like your favorite, secret neighborhood, where iconic locales dovetail with new and resurrected music spaces, boutiques, lounges and restaurants," reads the intro.
The Athens Area Arts Council will host a special seminar, "Taxes 101 for Artists," to help people with creative careers better prepare for tax season. The lunchtime learning session—set for 12–1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 17 at the Lyndon House Arts Center—features Michelle Griffith of Little House Accounting, who will explore common issues related to freelance and artistic professions like which deductions to take and how to keep track of expenses.
Packed lunches are welcome, or $10 meals can be ordered in advance from Pulaski Heights BBQ and delivered to the event. The session is free for AAAC members and $10 for non-members, and the cost of the session can be applied toward a $25 membership. RSVP with a lunch order by Friday, June 12 through the AAAC website or by calling 706-205-3055.
