Few artists maintain the kind of haunting mystery after their passing like Sparklehorse’s Mark Linkous. Much like Athens’ Vic Chesnutt, Linkous suffered bouts of severe depression and paralysis before committing suicide in 2010. To celebrate Linkous’ life, British filmmakers Bobby Dass and Alex Crowton directed The Sad and Beautiful World of Sparklehorse, which screens at the 40 Watt on Tuesday.
Flagpole caught up with the filmmakers and Angela-Faye Martin, a singer-songwriter with close ties to Linkous, to discuss the film and Sparklehorse’s legacy.
The Slingshot Festival returned to downtown Athens this past weekend. Flagpolephotographer Joshua L. Jones was there to capture the madness. Check out a gallery of his photos below:

A Peculiar Noise, a free-flowing documentary about the Athens music scene, will have its official premiere Saturday, Apr. 2 at the Atlanta Film Festival, when it screens at 7 Stages Theatre at 7:30 p.m.
Directed by onetime Athenian Jorge Torres-Torres, the film takes its name from an Olivia Tremor Control song and "documents the past and present of DIY underground music in Athens, GA," according to the festival's blurb.
Former R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe—who appears to be modeling his look after Luke in The Force Awakens these days—performed a spare, piano-driven rendition of David Bowie’s “The Man Who Sold the World” on “The Tonight Show” last night.

The thing you notice first about Austin’s South by Southwest in its metropolis-spanning current form is the jarring degree to which it is branded. Nearly everything is brought to you by some commercial entity or another. One gets the sense that this is what America will look like under President Trump: entire cities as living billboards, naming rights to public property sold to the highest bidder, every inch of real estate emblazoned with some lifestyle website’s logo.
AthFest Music & Arts Festival organizers have announced the headliners for this year's fest, which takes place June 24–26 in downtown Athens.
