'Run It Up' Podcast, Ep. 4: Ad·verse Fest
In "Run It Up," Flagpole's new podcast, we take a deeper look at some of the stories from the current issue. In this week's episode, Gabe Vodicka welcomes AC Carter, the local artist behind Ad·verse Fest, a music, drag and performance event happening Mar. 1–2 in downtown Athens. R.E.M. Tells Congress and Media to 'Ghost' Trump
When you're sure you've had enough/ of this president, well hang on.
R.E.M. continued its long-running feud with Donald Trump over the weekend, firing back at the president after he tweeted a video featuring one of its songs to his 58 million Twitter followers.
The video, originally posted by pro-Trump meme account @CarpeDonktum, consists of a series of images of Democrats looking sad at Trump's State of the Union Address, set to the 1993 R.E.M. hit "Everybody Hurts." The video was taken down for copyright violation, but Trump later posted the same video, this time set to Lee Greenwood's "Proud to Be an American."
"World Leader PRETEND!!!" the band said in a statement referencing another one of its songs. "Congress, Media—ghost this faker!!! Love, R.E.M."

Behind the Scene: Watch Cicada Rhythm Play Flagpole's Newlywed Game

For the new episode of Behind the Scene, Dave Kirslis and Andrea DeMarcus of local Americana duo par excellence Cicada Rhythm joined Flagpole's film squad for a very special Valentine's Day game. Longtime partners who are recently married, Kirslis and DeMarcus showed off just how well they know one another by answering a series of personal questions, then guessing the other's response.

Matt and Kim's Matt Johnson on His Favorite Band Memories

Electronic pop duo Matt and Kim are currently celebrating their 15th anniversary of being a band. Over the past decade and a half, musical and real-life couple Matt Johnson and Kim Schifino have become known for their catchy party tunes, over-the-top live shows and outlandish music videos. (They won an MTV VMA back when that still kind of meant something.) It didn’t take them long to go from writing songs in Matt’s childhood bedroom to playing massive festival stages on a regular basis, and they’ve held onto that position for well over a decade. Attendees of Wednesday’s Georgia Theatre show should expect plenty of singalongs, props and maybe a bit of light nudity.
Ahead of the show, we took a minute to talk with Johnson about his most notable memories from the past 15 years.

As the bassist for voguish local eclecto-pop outfit Reptar, Ryan Engelberger specialized in bubbly rhythms and spirited melodies. With Semicircle, he helped craft thoughtful arrangements that were delivered in hushed tones.
