Austin is a 15-hour drive from Athens, and let’s be honest: that's a two-day trip by car. After a stop for the night in the shadiest Red Roof Inn I have ever seen in Monroe, LA, my girlfriend and I hit the last stretch of road before Texas. After having a robot whip us up a milkshake north of Tyler, TX, we were confident that we wouldn’t need to stop any more before hitting the city.
But we weren’t so lucky. Somewhere just north of Athens, TX (ha), I was pulled over by a Texas Highway Patrol Officer for speeding. It was a 75 MPH zone. My 1991 Mercedes-Benz 190E can’t even go 80 MPH. When I explained to the officer that my insurance information was on my smartphone, I was asked to step out of the car. This is horseshit, I thought. There’s no way I was speeding—this guy thinks that I’m running drugs.

Buren Fowler, Drivin' N Cryin's lead guitarist from 1988–1993, passed away Saturday, according to a statement on the band's website. Fowler, an Athens resident, was also known for his association with R.E.M., having worked as Peter Buck's guitar technician and played guitar on two of that band's tours.

Andrew Heaton: Yesterday was the big outdoor concert at Norwegian Cruise Line’s private island in the Bahamas. Things happened, I suppose, but nothing so grand as the 3-and-a half-foot-around-in-diameter platter of chicken Biryani that appeared at the main dining hall for dinner back on the ship. The Biryani was really good, and I guess I did briefly wonder who was supposed to eat it all. I ran to get my camera to get proof of the massive pan of Indian food, which had become the highlight of my day, and when I returned, the shot I got of it became the new highlight of my day (see photo after the jump).
Legendary songwriter and former Modern Lovers frontman Jonathan Richman plays the 40 Watt Club tonight (Friday, Mar. 7), and we've got a pair of tickets to give away. To win, tell us in the comments after the jump why YOU deserve to go for free. We'll choose a winner today at 5 p.m.
