In the Loop: In the Future, Athens' Climate Will Feel Like Florida's

Welcome to Athens circa 2080.

Children growing up in Athens today won't have to move to Florida when they retire. Florida is coming to us.

A study recently published in Nature Communications by researchers from the University of Maryland and North Carolina State University modeled how the climate will change in 540 North American cities by 2080, then found cities where the current climate matches the model. For the average city, the climate 60 years from now will be like the climate is today more than 500 miles to the southwest. For those who don't want to wade through the entire study, Earther interviewed co-author Matthew Fitzpatrick.

If nothing is done to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, Athens' climate will most closely resemble that of Leesburg, FL's. Located near Tampa and Orlando, summers in Leesburg are now 2.4 degrees warmer and 78 percent wetter than in Athens.

This Sunday, Athens restaurants can start pouring mimosas and bloody marys for early risers—and by early, I mean 10-ish.

At a called voting meeting prior to their agenda-setting meeting Tuesday night, the Athens-Clarke County Commission unanimously approved an ordinance pushing up the time when restaurants can start serving alcohol on Sundays from 12:30 p.m. to 11 a.m.

Culture Briefs: Documentary on Mary Frances Early, First Black UGA Grad, Airs Tonight

A documentary on the first black student to graduate from the University of Georgia will air on Georgia Public Broadcasting at 10:30 p.m. today and again at 11 a.m. Sunday.

Mary Frances Early: The Quiet Trailblazer premiered in Atlanta last week, and an on-campus screening is being arranged, according to the university.

The film was co-produced by Maurice Daniels, professor and dean emeritus of the UGA School of Social Work, and Michelle Cook, vice provost for diversity, inclusion and strategic initiatives. It is narrated by former WSB-TV anchor Monica Pearson.

Culture Briefs: Photo Gallery: Project Safe's '70s vs. '80s Lip-Sync Battle, Groovy Nights

UGA Vets 4 Pets & People performed Tina Turner's cover of "Proud Mary."

Athens mayor-elect Kelly Girtz and others got their groove on Saturday at Groovy Nights.

The 17th annual '70s- and '80s-themed lip-syncing contest, held at The Foundry this year, raised funds for Project Safe, a local nonprofit that works to prevent domestic violence and offers assistance to survivors and their children.

Girtz—who played coy about his song selection last week—went with Madonna's "Express Yourself."

The county commissioner wasn't the only elected official on stage, either. Watkinsville Mayor Dave Shearon also got into the act.

Both may be skilled at winning elections, but neither could take home the prize at Groovy Nights. That went to the MAMAs for their rendition of Prince's "1999."

Culture Briefs: Classic City Rollergirls Cap Off Stellar Season With Big Win Against Gold Coast

The Gold Coast Derby Grrls traveled nearly 700 miles from sunny South Florida for the opportunity to lace skates and do battle with our hometown Classic City Rollergirls in the hostile confines of Athens Arena, in Bogart. It was only the second-longest road trip of the season for the team from Fort Lauderdale, which made an even more epic trek to Milwaukee in June.

Thursday evening, the 2018 Flagpole Athens Music Awards was held at the historic Morton Theatre. Hosted by local hip-hop artist and political activist Linqua Franqa, the evening was a spectacular success. Local musicians and artists received awards in 21 categories, including Jazz/World, Punk, Hip Hop, Live and Studio Engineer and Artist of the Year, to name a few.
