Celebrating the best in anime, sci-fi, comics and gaming, AthCon is an annual convention featuring vendors, guest appearances, panel discussions and plenty of costumes. Held this past three-day weekend at The Graduate, AthCon included appearances by the 501st Legion and "Walking Dead" actors, panels on "Dr. Who" and sci-fi writing, burlesque performances and a dance party with DJ Stormtrooper. Hundreds, if not thousands, of people congregated on College Avenue outside City Hall Saturday afternoon for the Athens Downtown Development Authority's food truck festival, which drew almost a dozen food trucks from Atlanta (as well as a local truck or two). Flagpole photographer Joshua L. Jones documented the scene.

Portland, OR psych-pop band Unknown Mortal Orchestra played the Creature Comforts parking lot Thursday night, with support from local group Mothers. The show, co-presented by the Slingshot Festival, was part of Urban Outfitters' grand opening celebration. Below, check out photos from the event.

For years, it's generally been considered poor form for a visiting act to cover an R.E.M. hit in the band's hometown, but if anyone could do it with festive authority, it's singer and bandleader Kate Pierson. Standing center stage in front of her own backing band, she closed a lively and intimate set at the Georgia Theatre on Saturday night with a three-song encore that featured a rousing version of "Shiny Happy People."
