As we've noted elsewhere, there are plenty of excellent options for live music this Halloween. But the centerpiece of Athens' concert calendar is the Drive-By Truckers' special, spooky return to the Georgia Theatre.
We've got a pair of tickets to give away to one lucky commenter. To enter, tell us below why you deserve to go for free. We'll choose a winner at 2:30 p.m. Friday.
Good luck, ghouls!
Jewish students at the University of Georgia are upset that the homecoming game against Vanderbilt falls on Yom Kippur, their religion's holiest day.
In a letter to UGA President Jere Morehead, Jewish students complained that they won't be able to participate in Homecoming because they'll be fasting and praying from sundown today until sundown Saturday.

Slimmish pickings for live entertainment tonight, but if you're out and about, consider popping into Green Room, where The Mattson 2 will perform. The California-based group, composed of twin brothers Jonathan and Jared Mattson, takes cues from jazz, surf, drone and new wave; all together, it's a chilled-out, West Coast take on the hyper-extended electro-jazz of Tortoise and their ilk.
Local experimental favorite Hand Sand Hands and a stripped-down duo version of jazz mainstay Kenosha Kid will also perform.
Stream the Mattson 2's new album, Agar, which is out today on Um Yeah Arts, below:
North Carolina native Caleb Caudle is no stranger to Athens, having made several stops in town during long tours across the country. This time around, he plays the Georgia Theatre rooftop’s Americana Monday series in support of his new record, Paint Another Layer On My Heart, which includes contributions from Americana sweetheart Lydia Loveless and members of American Aquarium.
In a surprise announcement this morning, the Georgia Theatre revealed that country superstar Kenny Chesney—he of "She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy" renown—will perform a show at the downtown venue Friday at 8 p.m. Posters for the appearance include a logo that reads "CMT Instant Jam," leading to speculation that the concert will be taped for an upcoming television show.
If you're a fan of Whiskeytown, the seminal but defunct Ryan Adams-led act from North Carolina, you're not alone amongst your fellow Athenians. Our little town boasts a rather sizeable and influential alternative country contingent; twangy rockers like Drive-By Truckers and, more recently, Futurebirds have even gone on to represent the Classic City on the national scene.
AthFest is upon us! And I know you're all planning to kick off this year's Club Crawl by camping out at the 40 Watt Club tonight for Flagpole's official showcase, featuring The Coathangers, Axxa/Abraxas, murk daddy flex and Shade.
The show is free with an AthFest wristband or $7 at the door without one. Don't have a wristband? Think the Flagpole showcase is the only AthFest stuff worth seeing? That's kinda crazy, but hey, we certainly can't fault you for wanting to soak up these sweet rock and psych vibes.
We've got a pair of tickets to tonight's show to give away. To win, tell us in the comments below why YOU deserve to go for free. We'll choose a winner today at 4:30 p.m.
